Periodontal Disease and Prevention
Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums, which gradually destroy the support of your teeth. Although the condition is multi-factorial, dental plaque is the primary cause of gum disease; Bacteria found in plaque produces toxins that irritate the gums causing inflammation (gingivitis) and bleeding. As periodontal disease progresses, the supporting bone irreversibly deteriorates. Early cases of periodontal disease can oftentimes be treated and managed at a general dental office. As the condition progresses, patients are better treated at a periodontal office. At our examination appointment, we will perform a thorough periodontal examination to determine the presence or absence of this condition.
Preventing Gum Disease
Periodontal disease has hereditary and local factors (ie. plaque). The best way to prevent gum disease is effective daily brushing and flossing as well as regular professional care. Once this disease starts, early professional intervention is imperative to prevent its progress.
Other important factors affecting the health of your gums include:
- Smoking
- Diabetes
- Poor contours of previously placed crowns, bridges, or restorations.
- Bite relationship, clenching and grinding teeth
- Medications
- Poor nutrition
How is Periodontal Disease Treated?
The primary goal of periodontal treatment is to remove all of the factors that are contributing to the condition. Scaling and root planing is a procedure that uses ultrasonic instruments and hand instruments to remove the plaque and tartar both above and below the gum line. And smooth the root surfaces of the affected teeth.
When should I see a Periodontist?
Advanced periodontal cases are more appropriately treated by periodontists and oftentimes involves minor surgical procedures. We work with a select group of periodontists who share a similar philosophy of our practice ensuring that the best interests of our patients are always top priority.
